Technopreneurs Making Things Happen in Bali

In 2010 we had the chance to chat with Michael Bodekaer about his awesome decision to set up a work environment on the beautiful, tropical island of Bali. One of his many initiatives was Project Getaway, as mentioned in the 2010 Version2 blog post. Looks like we will have another batch of super talented entrepreneurs attending this year. A truly fantastic event for networking, meeting new people, learning, working, while living in luxury in a relaxing environment. One of the little gems that emerged from Project Getaway (among many other projects), is an email application called Mailbird.

Michael Bodekaer has really been able to reach out to and inspire many other entrepreneurs, and has formed teams that focus on several different tech startups. Mailbird is a startup with a team of joined forces from the local talent in Indonesia, Denmark, including myself from the U.S. Additionally, Michael has been laying the foundation and building upon a business called Contenga International, with a work environment that directly correlates to that of Project Getaway. I was very lucky to have stumbled upon a job posting for Contenga International while still living in the U.S.

It felt like I finally found the best job in the world, and people who shared the same ideals as myself. Even though I felt that it was too good to be true, I took the risk. One of the core values that unifies location independent tech entrepreneurs is making things simple so life is more enjoyable. Now I’m launching a slick Windows email app, with a rockin’ team, while living in Bali, and learning so much in the process! According to market research firm, The Radicati Group247 billion emails are sent each day. That’s one email every 0.00000035 seconds. For an activity that is so prominent in the online world, whether for personal or business use, why not make it better?

Inspiration happens when you put a diverse group of people in one place, to create tools that help people around the world. With the endless Mac vs. PC battle, Mailbird is on team PC, while offering the aesthetics of Mac. Our work environment is even split between loyal Mac and ardent PC supporters. You get the best of both worlds when working with a talented group of people, with special trades and skills. The result is an all encompassing product that is well thought out, and built for people all over the world. PC has stepped up it’s game in many forms, including Windows supported apps, marketing, and efforts in closing the Mac/PC gap as shown in the adorable “I’m a PC and I’m 4 and a half” commercial.

It is pretty amazing to see what projects are birthed from events like Project Getaway. I am personally one to support small business and entrepreneurship, it stimulates economic growth and job creation. Having lived in a more conservative state in the U.S., I was used to seeing the monopoly of big corporate business eating away at smaller companies that were just starting up. All the smaller guys nipping at what little opportunity was available to them, and barely making it. In good practice, if I can go to a local budding business, I am more than happy to do so- support that underdog!

As a younger, evolving hit team for a Windows supported desktop email app, Mailbird hopes to bring a fresh experience to online communication. We are making it easier, integrated, simple, fast, and fun. We welcome those who are willing to take the plunge, and be one of the first to test drive Mailbird when the public beta is released. With the tech world dominated by male influence, as a dedicated woman, I am confident in taking the lead and ownership of the Mailbird project. With Michael’s ability to inspire and execute great ideas with wonderful teams, this is just the beginning for Contenga International’s growth. It’s about connecting, networking, and creating tools that help people while improving the quality of life. Cannot wait to see what other amazing ideas emerge from Project Getaway 2012!
